What the heck is ghee?! It looks like butter, it’s made with butter, it kind of smells like butter…but it is so much better than butter!
Ghee is a traditional, shelf-stable, clarified butter loaded with health benefits and culinary uses. It is made by removing the milk proteins and water from raw, unsalted butter, resulting in an easy to digest, lactose-free, nutty flavored butterfat that is packed with important vitamins, antioxidants, and essential fats. Ghee can tolerate very high temperatures giving it an advantage over regular butter (which can scorch due to its dairy content) and many other oils (notably olive oil, which becomes carcinogenic when heated) making it ideal for cooking, frying and sautéing.
At ghee girls, we create our ghee in the traditional, handcrafted manner using New Brunswick butter made from milk collected by local dairy farmers. We go to great lengths to ensure all of our ingredients are of the highest quality, sourced locally, and, when possible, organic.
Currently, ghee girls has three delicious flavours – gheekin’ out! is our au naturel ghee, ghee whiz! is our savoury ghee infused with rosemary, and garlic, and golly ghee! is whipped maple and perfect for those with a sweet tooth.
